If people like being with each other why do they need pets, especially dogs (regardless of safety) or cats ?|||it started way back when we lived in caves|||Because as sad as it sounds, pets give you unconditional love, don't shout back etc whereas people are just too much hassle lol|||they like to nurture and take care of them, maybe even save a life.|||The first domestic dogs came from the cheeky wilde ones way back in the day that used to scavenge off the campfire scaps. From there they went on to be used for hunting then finally breeds came indoors.
Cats have a different route an owe a lot to Egyptians back in the day.
Its rather an expansive question.|||Dogs go back to about 17,000 years ago, cats maybe 9,000 years.|||Some people (myself included) like the security that a dog brings to the house. Some enjoy dog walking. A few even think of their particular breed as a fashion accessory. But I think that most people would say that a pet enhances their lives - your dog, for instance, is there to welcome you when you come home at night, he makes you feel like a god as he follows you around when it's getting towards his teatime, he is grateful for even the smallest attention, like throwing a ball for him and he never criticises you when you come home drunk and drop your kebab on the floor.
So, let's just say a pet can complement the strengths and compensate for the weaknesses of a partner!|||In the dam stone age!|||They were originally used for a source of food (which i think shouldn't have been abandoned, but that's a different Answer to your Q.).
But you ask "when...", and that would be quite literally thousands of years ago after someone decided it would be better to breed them than just kill and eat them there and then.
This is how the original animal farm came about. Then people found a symbiotic relationship that didn't always involve eating them - and now we're in the stupid state that we're in today where lots of good, healthy, clean, nutritious meat is going to waste.
of course some animals were used for sex too. For example, Plato in "Republic" states as a definition of human sex, "That fevered and frenzied master." And adds, "Boys are for pleasure, goats for fun, and women for necessity." Of course, he refers only to the male sex drive (because women do not necessarily need women - although we know better than that nowadays).
Anyway, I probably digress with the above answer.
We're going back thousands of years, and I reckon it's indeterminate to pin point exactly when - but good Question that deserves more research.
