What happens when your flying a pet interstate and it has a stopover? Where do they keep the pets?

I have a puppy from Adelaide being flown up to the pilbara today. He has a stopover in Perth for 30-35 minutes. What will happen to him there? Do they store the pets in air-conditioning, are they fed? Looked over to make sure they are ok? Are they given water?|||For a 35 minute stopover he would stay in the freight hanger

If he missed his connection then the airline would be required (we hope!) to send him to a kennel|||In NZ I know that doesn't happen... you put food and water in with your pet and that's that. I would presume they'd keep the animals in the same place as they keep the luggage during a stopover but I would call the airline and ask about it :-)|||for 35 minutes, he won't go anywhere except from the one plane to the next, won't be time (or need) to feed / water etc!

What do your pets do when you get in the bed?

I have 3 cats and the youngest always comes running from wherever he is at in the house when he hears me turn on the fan and jumps right in the bed with me. It's sooo cute. The others will eventually come and run across my head while I'm sleeping or wake me up in the morning, but my youngest definitely has them beat in this category with his antics.

What cute or annoying things do your pets do when you are in the bed?|||My 2 cats each sleep on either side of me in bed. The dogs would like to also but the cats won't let them.

My cat George is very dysfunctional since he was taken from his mom at 4 weeks. (He's now 7 years old). He kneads bread on me and puts his head on my shoulder and in the morning, gently taps my face until I wake up to give him his breakfast. He's better than any alarm clock I've had. Trouble is, he wants his breakfast at 5AM!!|||My dog walks around my bed and makes this sound with his pows which is so annoying. He does that until I make some space for him in my bed. When he jumps in, he makes this funny sound as if telling that he is very tired and than lays down.|||my big dog is a bed hog. she spreads her legs and just passes out and snores worse than a human.

my lil dog curls up inside the blanket and eventualy swithces to his back with his man hood out from under the covers and spreads em wide lol its cute!|||let them sleep on the bed or get them their own|||our dogs come running when we say "bedtime!" jump on the bed and snuggle up :}|||My cat insists on sleeping next to me under the covers, which is totally fine with me. But her annoying habit begins around 5am when she proceeds to cry and lick my arm and bat my eyelids until I get up to feed her. Even if I hide under the covers she will sit on my head. I've endured this for about 12 years now.|||my cats pounce on my feet or my hands if i move them under the covers. or one of them sits on my chest and gets as close as possible to my face.|||My Dog jumps up in bed and is a bed hog. He is a big a big dog. My cat sleeps in my bed by my dog and they snuggle up and sleep. But after she id done hissing at him then she sleeps.|||Whenever I go to sleep, my little Chihuahua jumps on my bed (after several attempts because the bed is tall). He immediately comes right up to me and I pull the covers up so he can curl up in between my legs and go to sleep. He usually stays there majority of the night! Such a cutie (but also a heater!). :-) I love it when he does it!|||my dog isnt aloud to go upstairs so he sleeps downstairs on his dog bed|||Well, sometimes my cat just keeps whining if she wants out of my room, she has to stay in my room when it's bedtime because she'll wake up my mom and dad if she isn't.

Most of the time she crawls into bed with me(if it's winter)or sleeps in her little cat bed(if it's summer).|||my dog don't sleep with us, He sleeps in his kennel|||Comes to me before I go to sleep. Once I say, "Good Night", My dog, Lexus leaves the room and go to sleep.

How do you keep unwanted neighborhood pets out of your yard in a safe way?

We just moved into a beautiful home and unfortunately our neighbor has about a half dozen cats and they seem to like our front yard as a litter box. (yuck!) We have three small children and no pets so having to pick up after someone elses pets is not cool at all. Plus it's unsanitary! What can use that is eco-friendly and safe. Thank you and all answers are welcomed!|||Well, let's see. A yard is tricky since it's such a large area. I normally sprinkle raw, fresh pepper over the areas I don't want any of my four cats (all indoor babies) getting into. They really don't appreciate the sneezing attacks that ensue.

I don't approve of all the options listed in this site, but it has some good suggestions that are eco-friendly.

http://landscaping.about.com/od/pestcont鈥?/a>|||There is something on the market called Rid. It has to be sprinkled on the areas where you don't want animals. It works long enough to break their habits.|||Good luck!!! My neighbors cats wants to sleep on top of my car.

However, I was able to stop them from using my flowers beds at my front door for a litter box by turning on the water sprinkler. Cats don't like getting sprinkled with water. There are some commercial products you can buy. But its costly and I don't know how well it will work. You might check with your local seed %26amp; feed co-op.|||Buy a dog and install one of those invisible dog fences....here kitty kitty!

Are our first world country pets more important than third world starving children?

Just an FYI, I like animals. I think they should be treated fairly, although maybe not to the extent PETA would like. But I do not condone animal cruelty. On that same note, first world countries treat animals like royalty at times. There are plenty of pet owners who treat pets like they are their own children and would spend easily 50+ bucks just so they're dog could get a pampered bath and groom. Meanwhile, a starving third world child may struggles to get even a few cents worth of food with any nutritional value.|||Yes, my dog is more important to me than any kids in the third world, and that is true for deveral very good reasons.

First of all those companies that advertise on TV pay their CEO's 300K a year. Only about 1/4 of the money you send ever reaches that country. After it gets there it lines the pockets of the rich. Only a few pennies of that $50 will buy anything for the child.

Secondly, when you give money, you only make the situation worse. You take away their reason to work for themselves. I have seen that in the USA many times. My friends that grew up with everything can hardly function as adults. I had barely food to eat when I grew up. I managed to work my way through college on my own.

Thirdly, the government's of those countries are making a fortune off people, like you, sending money. They have a vested interest in keeping the children poor so that they can keep photographing them and suckering you into sending money. Keep in mind that for some of those countries their biggest export is photographs of starving children. The government officials have palaces and drive expensive cars thanks to people like yourself.|||The only agreement I have is that Americans, particularly Californian's, spend way too much on pets. I remember having to pay for pet insurance on my car while I lived there. What a load of crap. Don't let your animal roam free and I won't hit it.

But realistically your question should say that 3rd world people don't get treated like idiot American's pets. Children aren't treated any different than adults in those places.|||I am an animal lover as well. You do make a point, the behavior and expenses of some people towards there pet sis over exajurated...i mean you buy your dog a diamond neckless the same day thousand of people are starving from hunger.

How does Mexicana airlines treat pets in cargo hold?

I am relocating and need to take my dog with me. They won't let her travel in the passenger cabin anymore so I want to know if anyone with recent experience traveling with their pets as cargo with mexicana can let me know how do they treat pets. Thanks!|||i would never trust my dog with anyone else but myself when i am traveling and that includes mexican people

i would guess they would treat them just as they would treat luggage... very poorly|||How old is this question? It's really dangerous leaving your pet to someone you don't know when you and the dog already have a bond

What pets do you have? What are your thoughts and feelings about them spiritually?

Entertaining, informative and otherwise members of R%26amp;S, if you have pets what are they? Furthermore, what are your spiritual thoughts and feelings about your own pets and does that fall in line with the doctrine of your religion if any exist. Or, if you're not adhering to any religion, how do your thoughts and feelings (spiritually) about your pets compare your spiritual thoughts and feelings of humans?|||I have a fish. He never shows affection although I feed him every single day. I clean the tank when ever needed and still: ZERO EMOTION. I don't think, he knows anything about Spirituality. I gave up !|||I have 1 cat, 3 fish, 1 shrimp, 1 feather duster, 2 crabs, and 10 snails.

My wife has another cat, 1 shrimp, and 5 fish.

(she and I are very clear about who owns property in our house)

Of all these animals, none have a soul, nor do I.

It is abundantly obvious that the cats are the smartest of the entire lot (especially against the snails, which are fairly stupid and need help to avoiding killing themselves somewhat regularly, or the shrimps, both of which are easily confused). However, it is not clear to me that they have the same internalized thought process of a person. The fact is, if you found a person no smarter than a clever cat, you'd find that the person is rather slow to learn and easy to trick.

Don't get me wrong--the cats have come up with some ingenious ideas when the right motivation presents itself. I've even trained the older cat to listen to slight alterations in the tone of my voice instead of the words I use to figure out what command I'm giving to him (which means that it looks like he's responding to conversation directed to him, making him appear capable of contextualizing complex verbal information). However, I see no reason to think that they have the same ability to "think about thinking" and to conceptualize from particulars. The same cat I mentioned, for example, has learned the hard way to be scared of individual candles in our household, but is still fearless in regards to open flames from candles that he isn't familiar with.

I think the animals all have feelings, in terms of making lightning-fast judgments about how an action affects their lives. However, I don't think the feelings are as complex as ours. We consider so many other factors outside of our own immediate requirements as being important to our overall wellbeing (such as certain relationships that we cultivate, or long-term goals). This requires that we have a certain level of complexity in how we respond emotionally.

Although, to be honest, I'm not all that sure that the invertebrate pets have feelins. Consider my feather duster, which is nothing but a worm with a fancy head and a leathery-tube. If it really has any feelings, it certainly can't express them.|||We have a 12 year old dog, an 11 year old cat and a 2 year old cat. As a Christian, I firmly believe that God created these beautiful creatures to show humans what pure, unconditional love means. We love these 3 God given gifts to the depths of our hearts. Once their precious lives here on Earth are complete, I believe that they will return to the Father that created them to await the reunion with the family that loved them their entire lives and that they gave their hearts to.|||I have a dog whom I have much affection for, my family practically raised as he was barely a week old when we got him. He has grown with us and adores my family. There is no doubt animals can feel many emotions we also have.

I'm atheist so I don't have a religion or spirituality. I view my dog as my companion, my friend who sees me as the world as dogs see their owners. Yet, I know that just like me my dog is only flesh and bones. We will both die and that would be the end of our lives. We also both do not seem to care about such matter, we simply enjoy life. |||I have a dog that I love very much. And I feel that, in God's eyes, his life and Spirit are just as worthwhile as mine.

Some will argue that humans are some how "more important" to God - but how can they know that for sure?

Not to mention that animals lived on this planet for millions of years without doing anything detrimental to the ecosystem - at least not on a global level. For all of our "brains" we have sure made a mess of the place.

|||I have a Jack Demsey, a tabby cat, and three different species of hermit crab. Actually, Steve is plastic.

Spiritually, I feel a strong connection to Steve. Our souls mesh on an emotional level.|||My cat kills mice and bugs.

I'm cool with that. Spiritually, the less mice and bugs, the better. Once, my cat brought in a bat. That wasn't a very spiritual experience.|||0. 2 points from the ridiculous question|||I have a cat. There is no spiritual component.|||i have a dog and i love her like she was a human and we treat her like a human!|||Monkey Pope owns a bird named "pecker".|||My cats are my guides to the afterlife|||I am a practicing Buddhist.

My cat, Bubba, died suddenly and unexpectedly of a strangulated duodenum. He was a love but very shy. He had a monogrammed bed from L.L. Bean that I kept under my bed. The cat bed was situation on the floor under the head of my bed. After he died, I left his bed there for a long time. I could bear to put it away.

A year later, I got a dog in rescue. She had been born (according to the shelter's veterinarian) right around the time my cat had died. I found this really interesting. The dog was beaten, abused and abandoned in a national forest. When I got her she was nine months old.

Before I brought her home, I pulled out the cat's bed, laundered the cover and put it away. I should mention that the bed sits up really high and requires a step stool to get in it.

When I brought my new dog into my home for the first time, I closed off the doors to my office, my bedroom, the bathroom and the family room and let her explore the living and dining rooms and the kitchen. Then I introduced her to my office. She was very timid and scared, creeping around like someone was going to hurt her.

That night, when we went to bed, I opened the door to my bedroom. She stood in the doorway for a moment. She then went to the side of the bed, crouched down and slid under the bed up to the place where the cat bed used to be. She curled up there and slept there that night.

Since then she's moved into the bed. She's become a wonderful, energetic, happy, sparkling dog who has shaken off her brutal past. She's amazing and one of the great loves of my life.

I am convinced she carries the soul of Bubba and keeps us all connected. I also believe that while no animal should suffer as she did, she endured it in order to ultimately find her way to me.

What do you think of less common pets such as inverts and reptiles?

I'm curious...

These days, more and more people are seeing it ask ok to own more exotic pets. But there are still people who find owning some things "taboo".

So what do you think of owning a pet (or what do you think of people who own them) that is less common like a tarantula, scorpion, snake, some lizards, roaches, mice, etc?

And what is the most odd, exotic, or "taboo" pet you've seen?|||I think it is perfectly fine to own any of these animals as long as the individual has thoroughly researched the husbandry for that particular animal. About 90% of sickness and death in such animals comes about because the owner does not know how to properly care for and feed their pet.

If you are well-informed then I say go for it!

And personally I think that people who own leeches have some issues...|||taboo,,,,,lmao,,, only an idot would consider an animal to be taboo... people are so trendy.

I think as long as the animals were bred in captivity then its okay to own it. Any wild animals taken out from their original habbit is wrongfully owned.

I have seen just about every living thing on this earth and they are all equally cool.|||I don't own any of the animals listed, but I do own a conure, macaw, red footed tortoise, red eared slider turtles, and 3 guinea pigs...if those are exotic... I love owning exotic animals, it is fun to learn how to take care of them, and they are just unusual and cool!!The most "taboo" pet I can think of is...a Platypus ! (I've heard of a guy that owns one)|||I agree with the other commenter, as long as it's captive bred it's a-ok with me.

However, the more important matter here is if the person knows how to take care of it correctly.

I have friends that own lizards, iguanas, snakes, and taranulas and while they all know how to care for them properly, I've met people who don't and the animal suffers.

Would you hire a stranger to take care of your pets while you are on vacation?

What if the stranger was a very responsible 15 1/2 year old girl who gets good grades, is respectful, overall a good kid and charged around $7/day for pet-sitting? And I wouldn't actually STAY in your house to take care of pets, I would drive to your house every few hours to care for pets, water plants and get mail? What if the pet-sitter planned a visit with you first to get to know you and your pet and got care instructions from you?? Would you hire this person?|||maybeee but one time a friend let someone take care of their dog and the person who took care of the dog ended up liking it so much they never got their dog back i dont really no the hole story but you should cover liek what they should eat and how much exercise the dog should get and stuff liek that|||NO WAY!!!! i would just let a best friend or a relitive. who ever is free to look after them.

What can i do with my deceased pets when the time comes?

I am trying to prepare for the eventual deaths of my pet cats who are both getting up there in age. The problem is, I have heard in California they are very strict about what you do with your pets.

I don't like the idea of cremation or having them buried with a bunch of other dead animals in some mass burial. To complicate matters I live in an apartment complex and I don't know anyone that has property to bury my pet. I just have no idea what to do. I am looking for some unique alternatives.|||We have had two of our kitties cremated and their remains were put in nice Rosewood urns which are memorialized on a shelf with their pictures. This will also happen to the last two we have when their time comes, since they have lived 17 yrs and 18 yrs before passing we wanted to keep them with us with specific scattering instructions up on our passing we will also be cremated and if we out live the last two all of the ashes feline and human will be scatterd together. But for now they are always with us.The cost of cremation for both here in Sacramento was less than $300.00 including urn and a single cremation.Peace|||I have always had my pets cremated. I spread around his favourite part of the garden. No matter what happens with their bodies, it's horrible to lose them, so it only seemed right to put Chimmi where he liked to be when he was alive. How many people give pets as a Christmas gift?

I have never felt that giving pets as a "throw away" holiday gift was a very good idea, especially to very young children. They don't really know how to care for or properly handle a kitten or small puppy. Especially people other than the child's parents deciding to give them a pet. Most of the time the parent will end up caring for the pet or they will try to give it away to someone else.|||i thought people only gave that sort of gift in the movies ...

like lady and the tramp|||I find that it is not wise to give pets for Christmas.|||I think if you have been talking about it for some time and everyone involved is sure they want a dog/cat/bird/other animal, then it would be a nice suprise. Also you could get all the pet supplies as Christmas gifts.|||I totally agree, if your gonna get a pet for someone I think you should ask their other half or if its for a kid their parents if they definatly want one first, so many pets are but into care cause of it.|||I dont give them as gifts, but I dont nessisarily think it is a bad gift, that is if the person really wanted that pet. I would be sad if I received a pet for a gift, because I dont want one.

How to keep my pets from my parents?

I want to have pets in my house but my parents doesn't allow me to have one...

My house isn't really big and just 1 floor..

What pets is the easyest to hide and how can I hide it?|||Aquarium, with goldfish. You can't hide it, but your parents might be lenient, since the goldfish will stay put and not run around the house.|||you should not hide them from your parents but if you really want to then get a dwarf hamster and hide it under the bed or in the closet

|||Fish are NOT easy to keep. If any fish is not in a properly setup tank, they will die shortly. Goldfish are big waste producers and require a filter + heater. If you stock a tank with multiple fish, you'll also need to cycle the tank FIRST and you'll end up keeping only a couple due to size.

|||Goldfish have to see the light, and they cant have light at a normal bed time. And if you are doing this, the animal will NOT survive. You could run out of food, and then not get anymore...and end up with a dead animal. And then you could never clean the cage. Don't hide the animal.

|||get a hamster|||Thats not really a good idea. You WILL get caught eventually. Its not right to coop any animal in a to tiny cage and hide it where it will never come out or have air. Try to convince your parents about how much you want one. Get a small fish or frog. They are super easy to care for. Or get a mouse because they are tiny but they MUST have a cage. Not a box because they chew a lot!|||I wouldn't try to hide pets from your parents, they will eventually find out, trust me. Then you will have to find the pet another home. Instead, try to show them you are responsible and ready for a pet by doing research and showing them how much you know about it and how to care for it. If they still won't allow a pet, you could volunteer at a local Humane Society or get a job working with animals like a pet shop. Then you can have contact and enjoy being around them, but won't have to keep them in your house.|||preferably something you can keep in a cage....like a bird, or a hamster or guinea pig. Nothing too big.|||And what happens when (not if) they do find it?

Will you have to give it away?

Take it to a shelter?

Or will they simply ask you to release it into the wild?

All cruel things to do to an animal.

Listen to your parents.|||you will be on the dirt list if you bypass your parents orders and sneak something in...once you lose their trust, life can be over as you know it, just wait, or reintroduce the subject later and mention a few small, easy care pets they may approve of.|||snakes are really good cause they like dark and smalls places so they are really easy to hid ( trust me ive done it befor but my sis told on me :S)

How do I rent to people with pets without having to replace my nice carpet?

Let's face it, even the best of pet owners is powerless to prevent a pet accident. Even my stepmom, who babies her poodle constantly, has to pick up an "unwelcome present" from time to time.

I have just installed new carpet and would like to make it available to people who have pets (why discriminate against people who care about animals?). But how do I do it without having to pay huge amounts to clean/replace carpet every time someone moves? Does anyone have SUCCESSFUL experience with this?|||You can list "no pets allowed". And to the landlord that made the comment about a pregnant barmaid with the cat, this is an isolated incident and just because they work in a bar doesn't make them deadbeats or noncollectable.

I have given my landlords a $500 pet deposit ($250 nonrefundable) and am required to have the carpets professionally cleaned when I vacate and provide them with a receipt from the company that has done the cleaning. Yes my dogs have had their accidents but I clean it up ASAP as I don't want to live with doggie mess everywhere or smell it. I will be honest though I have 4 boys (ages 5-10) and they are capable of doing 10 TIMES more damage to the carpets and I am a stay-at-home mom who is constantly keeping on them to take off their shoes %26amp; keep drinks in the kitchen. But more accidents have come from spills %26amp; dirty feet than my 2 ten year old inside doggies. Just do a good job screening the people. But keep in mind you can't discriminate against tenants with children but you can with pets %26amp; aquariums (just put it in your listing).|||There is no way to guarantee keeping the carpet nice with pets. This is why so many landlords do not allow pets. All you can do is get enough of a deposit to fix it if it does happen.

Contrary to what you hear the bad experiences are the exception, NOT the rule. Most people that are willing to pay a substantial pet deposit will do all they can to get it back.|||In Australia, when you leave a rental home, you are obliged to leave it in the same condition as you first moved in. Also, on top of this, carpets have to be professionally cleaned and pest control needs to be performed if you have pets on the yard.

Perhaps you can put some clauses in the lease - condition/entry report and exiting conditions.

And if they fail to leave it in a good condition, the repairs come out of the bond money.|||NOPE

Lost my beautiful new Berber carpeting, padding, floorboards and baseboard when tenant snuck in her cat, then pleaded and begged and we took $250 deposit, and they totally ruined two large rooms of carpeting because her old kitty just peed at side of LR and DR. Then tenant got pregnant and moved out due to unhealthful environrment--which she created. And the deadbeat was just a barmaid and not collectible.

And sometimes you don't smell it (or see it) until it gets humid. . . . . .

While carpeting is brand new, I don't rent to pet owners. After the newness wears off I rent to pet owners with an extra pet deposit, but it still wouldn't replace my carpeting.|||I am a landlord and i charge a 150 security deposit per dog if its a cat i don't charge anything and caged animals nothing as well I tell my tenants if carpet and home is in same condition when they leave they get it back so that's at least how i do it and 90% of the time they get it back. so hope i helped you out a little good luck|||maybe you can make a deal with them stating that after they leave the rental they have to get the floors professionally cleaned|||One option might be to require a "pet deposit" sufficient to cover replacement cost of the carpet.|||Make them sign a contract that say s if the pets harm the house in anyway they pay for the damages.|||Definately have them pay for a non-refundable pet deposite. That way you are covered. You explained it very well, I think they will understand. If they don't then don't rent to them. I can't stand pet owners who make it bad for the rest of us. Because if my dog has a problem, my husband is right there with pinesol cleaning thoroughly.(forgive me is i misspell) Our house doesn't stink from our dog. But I will say some of the stains and problems on our floor come from smoking. Ashes and ocasionally hot ashes. If they love their animal they will pay the extra and be thankful for a Landlord that allows them the keep their pet. I have known some people to have to get rid of their animals because they couldn't find a pet friendly home. Good Luck.

What other pets are compatable with my green tree frogs?

I have a 30 gallon, with 2 green tree frogs, with a fountain, moss, soil, and gravel substrate. I am also keeping live tropical plants in the terrarium as well. What other pets can I keep in this terrarium with my green tree frogs?|||Big snake ;)|||thats abuse the snake will eat the frogs!!!!!

|||i agree. adding different species to the green tree frog's tank is not recommended, as they can pass disease to your frogs or vice versa.

however, u could add some fishes if your water area near the fountain is deep enough. provided u have a filtration system and the water quality kept on check often.

or u could add more green tree frogs in there.. :)|||It's generally not a good idea to mix different species. They can pass diseases to each other, and both have different living requirements.

Anoles are NOT okay with frogs. Anoles need much higher temperatures.

Best stick to just the frogs. Good luck|||I have kept many community tanks with very few problems. Mixing species is usually ok as long as

-all specimens are healthy

-sizes are similar

-habitat requirements are similar

-you avoid the tempation to overcrowd

Here are some suggestions:

Small treefrogs- gray, squirrel, barking

Small toads of the genus Bufo

Small terrestrial salamanders

Small geckos, such as house geckos

Small anoles|||hi there

all though most ppl will say not to make a community tank with reptiles ... anoles are ok with tree frogs....hope this helps|||I would recommend an iguana.

Animal behavior is the scientific study of everything animals do, whether the animals are

single-celled organisms, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, or mammals. It involves

investigating the relationship of animals to their physical environment as well as to other

organisms, and includes such topics as how animals find and defend resources, avoid predators,

choose mates and reproduce, and care for their young.

People who study animal behavior are concerned with understanding the causes, functions,

development, and evolution of behavior. The causes of behavior include both the external stimuli

that affect behavior, and the internal hormonal and neural mechanisms that control behavior. The

functions of behavior include its immediate effects on animals and its adaptive value in helping

animals to survive or reproduce successfully in a particular environment. The development of

behavior pertains to the ways in which behavior changes over the lifetime of an animal, and how

these changes are affected by both genes and experience. The evolution of behavior relates to the

origins of behavior patterns and how these change over generations.

What education and/or training is needed for a career in animal behavior?

Most scientists directly involved in animal behavior work in one of four broad fields:

ethology, comparative psychology, behavioral ecology, or anthropology. These disciplines

overlap greatly in their goals, interests, and methods. However, psychologists and ethologists are

primarily concerned with the regulation and functions of behavior, whereas behavioral ecologists

focus on how behavioral patterns relate to social and environmental conditions. Ethologists and

behavioral ecologists usually are trained in departments of biology, zoology, ecology and

evolution, entomology, wildlife, or other animal sciences. Most comparative psychologists are

trained in psychology departments. Behaviorists specializing in the study of human behavior are

usually trained in anthropology, psychology, or sociology departments.

Some jobs in animal behavior require only a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of

Science (B.S.) degree. However, most careers in animal behavior require advanced degrees,

sometimes a Master of Arts or of Science (MA., M.S.), but usually a Doctor of Philosophy

(Ph.D.) or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DV.M.). Earning advanced degrees requires a very

good undergraduate background, a strong academic record, motivation, and hard work.

Many colleges and universities worldwide offer graduate training programs in animal

behavior. In order to become a strong candidate for admission to graduate school, completing

an independent study project or obtaining some research experience as an undergraduate can be

very helpful. A book detailing thc current training programs in North America is available

through the Animal Behavior Society at the address given at the end of this brochure.

What career opportunities are available in animal behavior?

College Teaching and Research - Most animal behaviorists teach and/or do independent

research at colleges and universities. Many have academic appointments in biology, zoology, or

psychology departments. Others are employed in departments of anthropology, sociology,

neurobiology, animal science, wildlife biology, entomology, ecology, or in medical or veterinary

colleges.

Careers in college teaching and research usually require the Ph.D. degree; a very few junior

colleges require only a master聮s degree. Most animal behavior jobs exist within larger academic

departments, and animal behaviorists often teach in related disciplines such as physiology,

ecology, and evolution. Students who obtain the Ph.D. degree in programs offering broad

training in one or more of the behavioral or biological sciences will be more competitive in the

job market. Although animal behavior is a growing discipline, competition for jobs in teaching

and research is very keen.

An increasing number of animal behaviorists are being hired by universities to apply

behavioral knowledge to the production, management, conservation, and/or care of domestic

animals. Many are employed by academic departments such as animal science, veterinary

medicine, wildlife, or entomology for research aimed at areas such as improving livestock

production, managing wildlife populations, or controlling pests. Most researchers have a Ph.D. in

animal behavior or in some allied field of biology with advanced training in animal behavior.

Government and Private Research Institutions 聳 A growing number of animal behaviorists

work in government laboratories or in private business and industry. Many of these jobs involve

health-related research. For example, drug companies or government laboratories may hire

animal

behaviorists to conduct research on the behavioral effects of new drugs, to examine the links

How picky are airlines about the size of pet carriers for traveling with pets in cabin?

We'll be traveling internationally with Continental and Lufthansa. Both airlines have different size requirements for pet carriers--we have two mini dachshunds. Lufthansa requires 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.9 inches. Continental is 18 x 11 x 11 inches. Are they going to get out tape measures at the ticket counter? If we're an inch or two over will it be OK? It's impossible to to find pet carriers that are exactly the dimensions required. All tips about particular pet carriers or flying with pets would be greatly appreciated.|||use the smaller of the two! Those are *maximum* dimensions--you don't have to have them exactly that size, but they cannot *exceed* those dimensions

The carrier has to fit under the seat in front of you

The pet has to be able to stand up and turn around

if either of these conditions is not fulfilled....puppy ain't flyin'|||The dimensions are the maximum sizes, so just have a carrier that is smaller than the smallest one stated and you will be fine.

And yes, as the other poster stated, the carrier must fit ALL THE WAY under the seat, and if it doesn't you will be require to deplane and purchase a suitable carrier from the gate agent.|||They will be very particular because the carriers must fit under the seat in front of you - two inches over the limit will cause you a problem

What happens to the pets at a pet store if the pet store goes out of business?

It is advised that when wanting a pet, it is best to adopt at a shelter or adopt one from a reputable breeder. Pet store pets come from puppy mills and buying a pet from a pet store is supporting puppy mills.

But what happens to the pets if the pet store shuts down? Are they put in animal shelters? If they're going to end up in animal shelters anyway, isn't purchasing a pet "saving" it?|||You have good logic, I must admit. BUT! Unless your buying when the pet store for sure is closing it IS better to get from the shelter.|||If you purchase an animal from a pet store, you are giving them money to continue to set up PUPPY MILLS. If you aren't sure how bad that is, go to www.prisonersofgreed.org

^_^|||I have 1 dog, 2 cats, 4 rabbits, 13 rats, and 2 mice.

My dog's name is Huxley. He is a black and white pug/border terrier mix. He is the cutest thing! He has an adorable underbite and he always has an expression on his face like "What???" He's pretty small, but he is the most muscular dog I've ever seen.

My cats' names are Leo and Lex. They look a lot alike, but they are not brothers. They are both black and white. Leo is fat and shy. He really likes my mother. He is just a big baby. Sometimes he will cry so he can lift up his front legs and I can carry him upstairs to bed. Lex is a bit more rambunctious. He is a very sweet cat, and a loving cat, but he is not afraid to show you who is boss. He has a lot of personality, more personality than I've ever seen in any animal. He is adored by everyone who meets him. He is not afraid of people and he is just as friendly as can be.

My rabbits' names are Natasha, Nicolai, Valentine, and Button. Natasha and Nicolai are MY rabbits and Valentine and Button are foster rabbits for my local animal shelter. Natasha is a black American Fuzzy Lop. She has a bit of an attitude. She is not very friendly, but if you have food, she might hop up to you. She hates being groomed, (but she has to be because she is a long-haired breed), and she doesn't particularly enjoy being cuddled. Nicolai is more social. He is Natasha's best friend. They are both fixed, so they don't breed. He is a black Holland Lop. He enjoys just being a friend to Natasha. He likes to eat with her, play with her, and snuggle with her. Valentine is an enormous white rabbit. We aren't exactly sure what breed he is. He is very active, and very friendly. When we let him free range, he can get anywhere in the room. Button is a baby Chestnut Netherland Dwarf. He is not very social (not many dwarf breeds are), but he is very loving to my mother. He will lick her nose and lay down by her side.

My rats' names are Hasina, Panya, Cassandra, Emmaline, Charlotte, Wren, Archie, Dewey, Rascal, Reese, Violet, Sophie, and Felicity. I won't go into detail about all of them, but I can tell you they are all beautiful and loving. Out of all pets, rats are my favorite.

My mouses' names are Jasmine and Jezabelle. They don't have much personality because they're mice. However, they are sweet. They don't bite and they are pretty friendly, as far as mice go. Jasmine is a beautiful beige color and Jezabelle is black and white.|||Oh this is going to be long...

Convict- A 2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier;

Sweet, extremely loving, and an all around big baby.

I think his best feature is his eyes, they are gorgeous!

Felon- A 2 year old German Shepherd;

A total sweetheart, but is extremely protective.

I think his body structure is his best feature. His back isn't slanted like most Germans, and I personally think it looks perfect.

Maynard- A 1 year old Tabby Mix Cat;

The fattest, sweetest cat you'd ever meet.

lol he was brought home unexpectedly by my oldest sister, whom got him from an old man trying to get rid of him. He was about 4 weeks old when we got him.

His best feature is his fur, it's sooo soft. lol

Princess Prada- A 2 1/2 year old Siamese Mix Cat;

She lives up to her name. She is a total priss, and is indeed a "princess".(:

Her best feature is her gorgeous blue eyes.

Sammie- A 4 1/2 year old Ferret;

Sammie is the cutest little thing. He is so mischievous, and gets into EVERYTHING!

But he never gets in trouble because he's so cute.

(:

Boo- A 1 /2 year old Rose Hair Tarantula;

My first arachnid%26lt;3

He is handable, but is more of a look, don't touch pet.

His best feature is all his hairs. They make him look fuzzie(:

http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq315鈥?/a>

Mary Jane- A 1/2 year old Sinaloan Milk Snake;

She is extremely tame, and loves to be handled.

She is fed inside her enclosure, and I'm always sticking my hands in her enclosure to give her fresh water, and she's never attempted to strike me.

Her best feature is probably her colors.

I think she is stunning.(:

http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq315鈥?/a>

Dumeril's boa-Age is unknown, and I haven't named him yet;

So unpredictable, but he is really sweet once you get to know him.

He is probably the most beautiful snake I've ever owned.

Squirt- 3 year old RES turtle;

Can be a bit grumpy but we all love him.

He is just a cool, look don't touch pet.

Pets....................?

is there such thing as health insurance for pets?|||Yes, your vet or places like Petco should have the Info, I remember seeying something at the Vet's office where a company offered to insure a pet against all medical emergencies for something like $16 a month or so, with the way vet bills are that sounded great!|||Yes. It seems to be available national now. It used to just be in California, for years it was.

There are restrictions though.

Google Pet Health Insurance.

Dr. Jon's Pet Place (google) has some information and can direct you to a website.

Only one of my cats qualifies for pet health insurance.|||Yes there is. There are several companies that offer it. In general though, there are a lot of exclusions and is usually not worth the cost. Better to take the money you would spend on premiums and put it in a savings account toward future emergencies. It usually does not cover routine exams and vaccinations.|||Petsbest.com, petinsurance.com, etc. Becoming more and more popular considering people spend LOTS of money on their animals these days.|||Yes, there is. Our dogs are enrolled with VPI Pet Insurance.|||Yes! There is! My boss has a "wellness plan" through Banfield health centers. Check with your vet!|||yes, its starting to get talked about more|||Yes of course there is|||Yes of course!!!!

Pets??????

What are so small pets that I could get that are easy to care for and don't smell?(My mom is concerned about that last part)|||Well, all the fairly small rodents are decent, such as hamsters, gerbils, and rats. They won't smell depending on the bedding you use as well. If you use odor control it won't smell, for I am using it now and my hamster doesn't bother anyone in the house. Of course if you get close enough it will smell, but don't get too picky. They don't need too much money spent on them. Just a cage, chew toys, treats, and bedding. Of course food and water are needed as well. Hope this helps!|||I have a hamster you only have to clean its cage once a month. My brothe has a lizard you never have to clean its cage. Good Luck finding a pet ( :

|||The best pet i could reccomend would have to be a hamster they can be real friendly if tammed and handled well (as shown in handlers books) and they can be great for people who arent feeling well, the best advise i'll give is make sure their cage is secure as they are escape artists!!!

|||In my opinion rats are the best type of small pet you could get. Their very smart and affectionate, they also do NOT bite. I've had at least 7 and their so great. They also are great with other animals, my dogs love my rat Tank, who lives to his name (:

|||Do not get a dog. Dogs take a lot of work and care. If you aren't willing to put forth the effort, don't do it.

I think all animals believe more care than you may want. If you get a hamster, you will want to play with it so it doesnt get lonely or mean. Rodents can die of lonelyness. FACT.

|||It all depends on the space you have available to keep a pet. You should look at the area from the animals' point of view and animal proof it accordingly as most animals will escape at some point in their life! No animal should smell as long as you clean it out regularly. Once you've decided on an animal, find out what is involved in caring for them, i.e. cost of food, exercise, time cleaning out, neutering, vets bills etc. Remember that you will be responsible for their care, your mum won't be impressed if she's left to look after the pet!

I would personally recommend rabbits. Rescue centres regularly look for homes for bunnies so they are cheap to buy in the first place (mine was 拢5!) they are usually already neutered, they are relatively cheap to look after and don't take long to clean out, they are clean animals and don't need bathed and will provide you with hours of entertainment! The only downside to them is that they love to chew, but as long as you take time to bunny-proof your home and watch them when they are out they shouldn't be too much hassle. Get a pair so they can keep each other company.

Good luck!|||Alot of people ask this question very frequently and i dont know what makes people think ANY pet is easy to take care of. Alot of people right now said Rabbits. Rabbits are not anything near easy taking care of. And one thing also If you dont clean the area your pet is in it WILL smell. Even if its a pet fish.|||Rabbits. Very affectionate, need little space, need to only be fed once a day, and are easy to clean (provided it's a wire-bottom cage). They also come in all different sizes and varieties so you can get virtually whatever you're looking for: from a 2lb Netherland Dwarf to a 20lb Flemish Giant.|||a chihuaha or pomeranian or shih zut or the best one a teacup yorkie!! But hate to break it to u but all dogs will smell at some point or another whether its there breath or fur because the rolled into something they shouldn't have or the biggest one thee POOP because dog poop doesn't smell like daisies you know! lol! *Edit* I thought you were only asking for dogs! lol! But the hamsters and rodents are no fun...there just like decoration the bunny is pretty coll but not as good as a dog if you try out for a bunny try the orange lionhead bunny there cute and small!

http://image38.webshots.com/38/5/35/42/2鈥?/a>|||Well there are lizards....they don't smell they eat crickets and are very easy to take care of and fun to have. i have six of them.|||rabbits they are easy to care for and you only need to wash them 2 times a month.Plus theyre cheap and REALLY small!|||i say a tea cup yorkie
