How Do Pets In Areas With A Lot Of Thunder And Lightning Handle It?

In California we don't get a lot of thunder and lightning but whenever we do, it often terrorizes dogs and cats. There are some areas where thunder and lightning are a lot more usual than here, like the Midwest and the South. If you live in such an area, with a lot of thunder, how do your pets handle it? Is there anything you do to help them handle the stress? Or do they just get used to it after a while? Thanks. Just curious.|||It depends on the pet. Thunder storms have never bothered any of my cats that I can tell and both my dogs, in spite of being a breed that is notorious for thunder storm phobia, are fine with it. Occasionally my dogs will bark at the thunder, but it's the kind of bark they give when they think they hear someone at the door but aren't really convinced themselves. Other dogs are bothered by it. Some are fine as long as they can go hide in the closet, others need medication (a sedative such as ace promazine or valium or a supplement like melatonin or rescue remedy) to help them be less frantic during a storm.|||Well it depends on the personality of the animals. they might take it under stress or not mind it. all depends.|||Most likely they will hide.After awhile they get used to it.You can speed up the process by finding them and show them nothing is happening.|||Mostly they take their queue from their owners. If you're upset by it, then they will be too. My cats all ignore it.
