How picky are airlines about the size of pet carriers for traveling with pets in cabin?

We'll be traveling internationally with Continental and Lufthansa. Both airlines have different size requirements. Lufthansa is 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.9 inches. Continental is 18 x 11 x 11 inches. Are they going to get out tape measures at the ticket counter? If we're an inch or two over will it be OK? It's impossible to to find pet carriers that are exactly the dimensions required. All tips about flying with pets would be greatly appreciated.|||Well, it depends on the airline. They actually sell them at the airport, so if they sell it it will be accepted. The soft ones that are ABOUT the right size are fine as long as you can get most of it under the seat. I have actually given my pet a tranquilizer or a little bit of Benedryl to make my pet sleepy/groggy. It helps them be calmer and it won't hurt them.|||the carriers have to fit those dimensions, because the carrier must be able to fit under the seat!

Ive heard of people getting away with squishing a soft carrier under the seat, but if its a hard carrier, you will definantly have to check your pet in as luggage.

Find a carrier that fits those dimensions to be safe.|||Try calling the airline you are planning on taking and see what they say!
