What happens to the pets of a person living alone who is taken to hospital?

If there are no family or friends in the area to assume responsibility of them?

By pets I mean dogs, cats etc, not just fish/hutched animals.|||That's a tough question. In an emergency, and you had to go to the hospital ASAP, maybe, a neighbor you could trust, to come over and feed the animals for you, you could offer some money for doing it too. I know MY neighbor would do it for me, BUT, you should think about a situation happening to you BEFORE hand, and make those arrangement now! There has to be some teenager or college student who would be happy to do it for you. Also, God forbid, you die while in the hospital. Make a will, and have one of the Pet Rescue places come and pick them up.|||There are Pet Sitters, or people who can come in and look after the pet i.e. feed them, give medication. Alternatively you could look on your Vet's notice board as there may be someone who can take the pet in until the owner is out of hospital.|||I would think there is no standard protocol.Simply find some volunteer somewhere. You have a good idea in the making? Bless you.|||I believe the humane society comes and holds them for you a certain amount of time.
